Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition has cast a dark shadow over PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 – here are our top tips to getting started in New Tristram and finding the best gear.
Don't fear the Reaper
Difficulty levels like "Master" and "Torment" may sound daunting, but bravery in the face of a challenge is the key to bagging serious loot. You can increase the difficulty level of your game at any time – the higher you go, the faster your character will level up, giving you better weapons, armour and magic items from chests and enemies.
Evil loves company
Getting together with friends to go demon slaying will increase the amount of XP the whole group earns, as well as the amount of gold and items that you're rewarded with. Don't know anyone with a copy of the game yet? No problem – just adjust your in-game network setting to "open to the public" and anyone can jump into your quest to help out.
Be good to the Blacksmith
Back in New Tristram, the Blacksmith is waiting to forge all sorts of weapons and armour for you on his anvil. Spend a little of your hard-won gold to get him the valuable training he'll need to craft more powerful kit; you'll also need to donate some of the loot you've collected for him to salvage. By breaking these items down, he can use the parts to create even more tools of destruction.
Remember the merchants
You'll encounter merchants on your travels who can sell you weapons, armour, potions and more. You'll find two of them in New Tristram – and it always pays to check in with them regularly to see what new kit they've got for you.
Get amongst it
The more XP you earn, the faster you'll level up and the better loot will be dropped – and in Diablo III, it pays to be quick when entering the fray. Taking out multiple enemies in quick succession will earn you XP multipliers which will get you to the next level quicker than if you hang back and pick enemies off one by one.
Go exploring
On your travels through New Tristram and beyond, you'll come across various dungeons, cellars and other rooms that aren't necessarily part of your quest – but they're well worth venturing into. Chances are you'll meet some monsters, but often you'll be rewarded with a tasty loot drop for your troubles.
Hunt down Treasure Bandits
These sneaky thieves lurk around dungeons, caves and cellars filling their sacks with gold and other loot; corner one and give him a sound thrashing and he'll drop all his ill-gotten gains for you to pick up.

- Keep moving – many enemies will create deadly pools of acid, blazing fires or poisonous gasses that you'll want to avoid; roll away quickly with the right stick.
- Experiment with your skills – every time you level up, you'll gain new skills. Practice with different combinations until you find a set-up that suits how you want to play.
- Use gems – towards the end of Act 1, you'll start collecting gems. These can be added to weapons and armour that have sockets, increasing their powers in different ways depending on the gem.
