estimated odds of random console ids

So, you're banned from PSN/want to protect your CFW PS3 from getting banned. You check these forums, and discover that with a valid Console ID and PSID Patch you can unban/protect your PS3 from ban.

Problem is, you don't have a valid PS3 Console ID. But PSID Patch has an option to randomize your Console ID. The question is, what are the odds that a randomly generated Console ID will end up being valid?

PS3 Console IDs are 32 hexadecimal digits, followed by 32 null/zero digits. The number of possible combinations from 0x32 to Fx32 is 340282366920938463463374607431768211456. According to Wikipedia, the PS3 has sold 77 million units worldwide. That means the odds of randomly generating a valid Console ID are 77000000 in 340282366920938463463374607431768211456, which roughly translates to 1 in 4.4192515×1030.

To put that in perspective, according to Wolfram Alpha the estimated number of grains of sand in the entire world ranges from 1×1020 to 1×1024. You're over a billion times more likely to randomly pick one "correct" grain of sand from all the grains of sand from all the beaches and oceans of the entire planet.

Good luck

EDIT: So I just learned (with help from ItsDark's and sarracen's comments) that the first 16 digits of a Console ID are used to identify a PS3's Target ID and SKU. PSID Patch does not change the first 16 digits of a console ID for this reason. This means a few things. For starters, there are 1.8×1019 possible 16-digit hexadecimal combinations, which is significantly less than the 3.4×1038 possible 32-digit hexadecimal combinations I was dealing with in my previous odds calculations. However, it also means I cannot use worldwide PS3 sales figures in my calculations, as different regions have different Target IDs locked to their region, meaning each Target ID has its own sales figures that needs to be used in place of the 77 million I was using earlier. This is further complicated when you factor in the different SKUs, since each Target ID/sales region has different sales figures for each of the many PS3 SKUs/model numbers.

I tried searching for PS3 sales figures by region and by model/SKU, but all I could come up with was this wikipedia article that shows sales figures for Japan, Europe, and the US; and this article about UK sales figures. I have no idea how the remaining 34 million PS3 sales are divided amongst the 7 other Target IDs. I found nothing on sales figures for different SKUs.

So, time to make wild guesses. I'll divide the 34 million unaccounted for sales evenly amongst the remaining 7 Target IDs. I'll also divide the sales for each region evenly amongst all PS3 SKUs/models available in that region. It's not going to be 100% accurate, but considering the extremely large numbers we're dealing with, it should be reasonably close.

1 - Estimated
2 - Obtained by using the formula "1 in" 18446744073709551616/(Sales Figures/Number of SKUs)

So, not quite as astronomical as originally thought, but still damn near impossible.

hopeful the helps you get back on psn do the math it works lol or pay!
FOR NOOBS USE PSN NOPEV1.2 IT MAKE RANDOM CIDS IF YOU CAN FIND ONE LOL!!!!!!

Actually for every region/sku/revision combo there is a full 16 hexdigits range, so the number of invalid ids overwhelms the number of valid ones in a ratio way lower than the stated one. I cant calculate accurate numbers without internal sales data for every combo, but u get the picture. That doesnt mean its imposible to be uberlucky and get a valid one on first try lol. For those willing, the new ccapi lets u try a bit faster, but u better be ready for a long and annoying task. Besides testing garbage against sony servers over and over from the same ip is far from stealth, so proxies are a friend. Protip is valid numbers starting with 10 or 14 seems more common than others, so probably deviation tops around there letting u reduce to subsets. Anyway i dont do nor support nor encourage, but knowledge should be free. I rather petting my yet to ban private cids. **** maths!

Hey, I know where you got those stats from, OP. I am the guy who created the original post that ianModz_Dex copy/pasted here. You can find the original here (it's much easier to read):

Some more fun facts from that thread:

"The odds of winning the lotto in my home state are 1 in 175,711,536. Even with the revised odds I posted today, you have a much better chance of winning the lotto several times consecutively than you do randomly generating a valid console ID. So, go ahead and play the lotto. If you win, buy a bunch of PS3s, and send me a couple. I could use some spare console IDs."

"According to the bottom of the Forum Index page, NGU has 936,890 members. If every member decided to focus on finding one valid EUR PS3 console ID (since EUR has the best odds), it would take 1.099×107 attempts per member before they succeeded. That's 11 MILLION attempts. Per person. For ONE console ID."

On the subject of CID Generators:

"...such a program would likely be a waste of time. Such a program would need to try every 16-digit hexadecimal combination for every Target ID and every SKU possible. That's 18446744073709551616*11*13=2637884402540465881088 possible combinations. Since attempting to sign in to PSN is not an instantaneous process, testing all those combinations would take an absurd amount of time. Even at one attempt per second (which would be fast considering how long it normally takes to communicate with the PSN servers), it would take 6100 times longer than the current age of the universe to test them all. If all 1.2 billion PCs in the world today were to run such a program, and no two PCs attempted the same combination, it would still take 69659 years to finish testing all possible combinations."

So, there you have it. This is my first post on these forums, btw. Nice to meet you all.

yup I guess copy n paste:rolleyes: I guess you want credit now for the thread

I don't understand. Are you implying you didn't copy/paste my post? That would be a strange denial considering the original thread still exists with a working graph and everything. Also, compare the spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. of the original to this one you just made. Clearly not the same person. I could post on the NGU forums as baconpie to prove it further if you want...

I edited my last post with a screenshot since posting links doesn't seem to work. Notice the matching username. You can Google "Estimated odds of randomly generating a valid Console ID using PSID Patch." to find the original thread. I'm going to make a new post as baconpie over there to confirm I'm not just stealing his username. Check the last page.
