Before E3, Sony finally confirmed the existence of the PlayStation 4 Neo, an upgraded version of the PlayStation 4 console. However, that might not be the only new PS4 to hit the market later this year.
Takashi Mochizuki, a tech reporter for the Wall Street Journal, tweeted yesterday that a Sony analyst said a PlayStation 4 Slim is being made. He referenced it alongside the PlayStation 4 Neo, naming them as two distinct consoles.
Mochizuki followed up with a second tweet saying the analyst expects the two consoles to be unveiled in time for the Tokyo Game Show, but that Sony “declined to comment” about it.
The PlayStation 4 Slim has yet to be announced, just as the Neo has yet to be unveiled. However, the existence of a slim version of the PS4 would match Microsoft’s strategy of releasing both the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio. Where Microsoft chose to announce its two new Xbox One models at E3, Sony appears to be waiting until closer to their launch.
It’s unclear from Mochizuki’s statement if the PS4 Slim and PS4 Neo are expected to be revealed at the Tokyo Game Show or before it. The Tokyo Game Show takes place on September 15-17, so we should learn more then. This timing fits well with initial PS4 Neo rumors, which claimed October is when new PS4 games will be required to have “Neo Mode” as an option.
Without an official announcement from Sony, the existence of the PS4 Slim remains unconfirmed. However, a reporter from the Wall Street Journal is unlikely to be unreliable, making this a credible rumor.
Do you think it is a good decision to make a PlayStation 4 Slim? If one exists, are you more inclined to buy it or the Neo? Let us know in the comments.
