Ever since Nintendo announced that the NX would not be shown at E3 and wouldn’t be out until March 2017, rather than in time for the 2016 holiday season like many people expected, fans have been wondering just what the upcoming console is like… and why Nintendo is waiting so long to reveal details.
Many rumors have circulated about the NX, from repeated claims that it will be a hybrid between a home console and a handheld, to the belief that it will support Unreal Engine 4. Nevertheless, we’ve heard no concrete facts about the NX, a frustrating position for potential customers to be in.
However, Nintendo has good reason not to announce their new console too soon. One of the main reasons the Wii U failed was its weak launch lineup.
Available games are usually the deciding factor in whether someone buys a console or not, and while the Wii U eventually had some fantastic games, it looked a little shaky at launch. Many people held off on buying it right away, which contributed to the Wii U’s decline. Above all things, Nintendo can’t afford to make the same mistakes with their next console.
So far, only a handful of games have been announced for the NX. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a good candidate to be a launch title, since it was delayed to 2017, although it will also be released for the Wii U.
Dragon Quest XI is set to come to the NX, 3DS, and PS4. Likewise, the Japan-exclusive MMORPG Dragon Quest X is planned for the NX. Just Dance 2017 and another Sonic game have also been confirmed.
Imagine if some of these became NX launch titles alongside a new 3D Mario game in the style of Super Mario 64, a main-series Metroid game, and exciting unannounced games from third party developers. It could really start the NX off on the right path.
We don’t know if Nintendo is keeping quiet about the NX until they have a solid launch lineup, but it’s a good reason for them to do so. Current rumors claim the NX will be unveiled later this month, but so far nothing official has been announced.
