The long awaited update of the Xbox One's Dashboard falls today. A press release released by Microsoft says it includes a new home screen, an enhanced guide menu, the Beam streaming option, enhanced multitasking and deeper Cortana integration.
The first thing that owners of Xbox will see when booting tonight is the new home screen. Microsoft says it is faster than the old one and designed to "prioritize the most valuable content for your games".
The game icon is smaller, while community tabs such as clubs, groups and achievements are more visible. The background image will also be the most recently displayed if you do not have a fixed background image selected.
Pressing the Xbox button on the controller will display the new guide on the left side of the screen. It will include fast links to games and apps, as well as games and gold offers for this month for Xbox Live Gold members. More hunt for offers in the showcase, just tap the button and start downloading what your account will allow you to buy. The guide also includes a simple integration of the background music player and access to the GameDVR.
The new multitasking system is described as an evolution of the old one. Microsoft said they were closely integrated with the guide itself. It includes a new tracker that allows you to keep the goals while you play. Cortana can also be put into service. Its new multitasking will allow you to use voice commands more easily and consistently to control your settings and play music in the background.
Other new features include a new accessibility feature called Copilot. It allows players to split the functionality of a single controller on two different controllers. "This will help make Xbox One a platform that can enjoy multiple players with only one main player," Microsoft said.
For home theater enthusiasts, a small update will also be distributed next week that will also allow the Blu-ray player to take advantage of debitstream passthrough to natively decode sound, including Dolby Atmos and DTS: X.
