Hello Cruncher's

Starving for help in Klei's brilliant PS4 and PS Vita survival adventure? We've got some handy food for thought for you...

So you've downloaded Don't Starve - but your character just keeps dying from hunger. Or insanity. Or by being eaten.

While a lot of the fun in this excellent PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita game is discovering it for yourself, we've got a few pointers that will help keep you out of the belly of its many beasts a little longer...

Here's the light of your life

Don't worry too much about food for day one in the game, as you'll get by with any carrots or berries you find. Your very first priority in Don't Starve is scavenging enough materials to build a fire. If you get caught in the dark, the deadly Night Monster will kill you within seconds. Craft an axe with one twig and one piece of flint and start chopping down trees for firewood.

At the very least, collect two bits of cut grass and two twigs to create a torch. However, while they're portable, torches don't last very long. Camp fires (three bits of cut grass and two logs) are better. But fire pits (two logs and 12 rocks) are your best bet, as they're safer, last longer and can be relit.

Keep your desires burning

Most combustible items can be used to fuel a fire once it's lit - pine cones and wood are good sources early in the game, although manure and guano are far better. You'll find these around Beefalo herds and unplugged sinkholes. Just don't put too much fuel onto a campfire, as the flames can spread and cause vicious wildfires.

Filling your belly

Carrots and berries are better for your character's hunger if they're cooked, so use a controlled fire to add some sizzle. Fancy something meatier? Craft a trap (six bits of cut grass and two twigs) and leave it over a rabbit hole for a day. You'll have fresh meat for a tasty BBQ come dusk. Traps can also be used to capture frogs and spiders, although meat from the latter is dangerous to eat.

How to make friends and influence pigs

Don't be afraid of the humanoid looking pigs that wander about. They'll ignore you unless you attack them, but you can turn them into valuable mates by offering them eggs or meat

Once you've befriended a pig - or an army of them - they'll follow you, attack your targets and help you chop down trees, for up to a couple of game days. Just stay away from them during a full moon...

Keep your head

Managing your character's sanity is just as important as keeping an eye on their hunger. As a character creeps towards insanity, the screen will change and shake, rabbits turn into dark creatures called Beardlings and hallucinations will eventually come alive to kill you.

Being around monsters, darkness, poor weather conditions and eating spoiled food can all drain your sanity. Wearing crafted clothing, such as a garland (12 petals), eating certain types of food and sleeping (using a roll or tent) can restore your character's ailing mental health. Be sure to have food ready after a nap, as your character will often wake up hungry.
