Modding for Dumbies

Hi,

I am a complete newbie with modding and want to learn. Just some general questions.

1) I understand that you need to jailbreak your p3s. Is there a preferable software for it?
2) What is the bare minimum of programs I need to install if I want to mod a game using predeveloped menus etc? What is the process?

To start off with you will need to check the console model number to ensure it's possible to downgrade that console and you will need a E3 Flasher. I would suggest you look on youtube how to down grade a PS3 with an E3 Flasher. I have just done a quick search so maybe this video might be helpful to you?

Yes you can still go online. Down grading the console enables you to install a custom firmware which enables you to have more access/control over the system files. If Sony ban you from online access you can change the console CID to a new one and you will regain online access. This forum has some public CID's but don't always last long. You can also purchase private CID's and that can last a long time providing you don't get caught modding or go crazy with the mod features.
If I were you I would read up on as much about down grading and the available firmware before doing anything because if you do something wrong you can risk bricking your console or really messing up the system files if you don't know where you should be navigating to when adding mod menus.

Are there any consoles for sale that are already done? I've looked on ebay etc.. but I don't want to end up with something that is a problem. Anyone on here sell them that you would trust? Would make it far easier.
