When Sony announced a special PlayStation Meeting set for September 7, it was widely anticipated that this was when the rumored PlayStation 4 Neo would be revealed. After all, Sony already confirmed the Neo’s existence, if only to say it wouldn’t be present at E3.
The prediction came true. Sony announced the next model of the PlayStation 4, officially called the PlayStation 4 Pro.
The PlayStation 4 Pro fits the rumors about the PlayStation 4 Neo in that it is an upgraded model of the console meant to fit alongside the PlayStation 4 in this console generation.
So, what are the benefits of the PlayStation 4 Pro?
It has an improved GPU, with twice the power of the current PS4 GPU. This allows it to support 4K visuals as well as HDR, or High Dynamic Range, which gives the visuals an expanded range of color and contrast. Current PS4 consoles will receive an update to allow them to support HDR as well.
If you can’t take advantage of 4K and HDR, don’t worry. You’ll still see a visual improvement with the PS4 Pro due to its GPU. The PS4 Pro also has a CPU with a higher clockrate and a 1 TB hard drive.
Finally, if you plan to make use of virtual reality, the PlayStation 4 Pro’s visuals will provide the best PlayStation VR experience.
New PS4 games will be playable on both current PS4 models and the PS4 Pro, as will games you already have, both physical and digital. Select older games will be patched to make use of the PS4 Pro’s capabilities via “forward compatibility.”
